The Three-Day Fasting and The Divine Revelation of Surah Al-Insan
One of the most extraordinary acts of charity performed by Huzoor Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha) is recorded in Islamic history as the event of the three-day fasting, which led to the revelation of Surah Al-Insan (also known as Surah Al-Dahr) from the Holy Quran. This event serves as the ultimate testimony to her selflessness and her willingness to sacrifice everything for the sake of Allah and His creation.
The incident began when the two blessed sons of Syeda Fatima, Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain (ASWS), fell ill . The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWAW) advised Imam Ali and Syeda Fatima to make a Nadhr (a vow) to Almighty Allah, promising to fast for three consecutive days if their sons were restored to health. When the two young children recovered, the entire family—Imam Ali, Syeda Fatima, Imam Hassan, Imam Hussain, and even their devoted maid Fidhdha (may Allah be pleased with her)—undertook the fast .
Each day of this sacred fast, the family had nothing to break their fast except a few round loaves of barley bread, just enough for each person to have a small portion . However, on each of the three nights, at the exact moment when they were about to break their fast and finally eat, a different needy person appeared at their door seeking food in the name of Allah. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWAW) later revealed that these were divine tests, and on the first night, it was the Archangel Jibreel-e-Ameen (Gabriel the Trustworthy) who came in the form of a poor man .
On the first night, a poor man knocked at the door and asked for food in the name of Allah. Without hesitation, all members of the household gave their share of bread to the needy person and broke their fast with only a cup of water . On the second night, an orphan appeared at their door, begging for help and stating his hunger. The family, having not eaten for two days and already weak, once again gave away all their food and broke their fast with water alone. On the third night, a captive came to them seeking sustenance, and for the third time, this blessed household gave away everything they had, spending the night without food .
When the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWAW) met his family after the three days of fasting, he found them starving and trembling with hunger. His blessed heart was filled with immense grief at the sight of his daughter and grandchildren in such a state of deprivation. But at that very moment, Archangel Gabriel descended with a divine revelation—the verses of Surah Al-Insan—in praise of their epic act of selflessness and charity . Almighty Allah declared: “They fulfill vows and fear a day the evil of which shall be spreading far and wide. And they give food out of love for Him to the poor and the orphan and the captive: (Saying): We only feed you for Allah’s sake; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks” (Surah Al-Insan, verses 7-9) . This revelation established the incomparable status of Syeda Fatima and her family as the foremost examples of charity and altruism.
The Wedding Dress: A Perfect Example of Altruistic Charity
On the night of her blessed wedding to Imam Ali (ASWS), Huzoor Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha) demonstrated her extraordinary generosity in a manner that would forever be remembered. She had received a new dress for her wedding, a special garment befitting the occasion of her marriage to the Lion of Allah. However, when a poor young woman from the Ansar came to her door seeking clothing and assistance, Syeda Fatima did not hesitate . She reflected upon the Quranic verse: “You will not attain unto piety until you spend of that which you love” (Surah Al-Imran, verse 92) .
Without a moment’s hesitation, she took off her new wedding dress, the very garment she had just received for her most special day, and gave it to the poor young woman. She kept her old dress for herself and went to her husband in a simple, old garment. When the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWAW) visited her the next day and noticed she was not wearing her new wedding dress, he asked his beloved daughter about it. Syeda Fatima explained: “O father, a poor young woman knocked the door asking for a dress. I wanted to give her my old dress but then I remembered this saying of Allah, ‘You will not attain unto piety until you spend of that which you love.’ Therefore, I gave her my new dress that I loved” . This act of selfless giving, even at the moment of her greatest personal joy, exemplifies the purity of her soul and her complete detachment from worldly possessions.
The Necklace Incident: A Divine Cycle of Blessings and Generosity
Another profound incident that illustrates the unparalleled generosity of Huzoor Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha) is the story of the necklace. Jabir ibn Abdullah Al-Ansari, a prominent companion of the Holy Prophet, narrated that once, after offering the afternoon prayer with the Holy Prophet, an old immigrant man arrived wearing worn-out clothes and barely able to walk due to old age and weakness . The old man approached the Holy Prophet and exclaimed: “O Prophet of Allah! I am starving, so feed me; I am naked, so clothe me; and I am poor, so help me!”
The Holy Prophet instructed him to go to the house of his daughter Fatima, knowing that she would assist him. When the poor man arrived at her door and explained his condition, Syeda Fatima looked around her simple home. She found nothing of value except a goatskin on which her two young sons, Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain, used to sleep. She offered the goatskin to the old man, but he replied: “O Daughter of Prophet Muhammad! I complain to you of hunger and you give me a goatskin? How can I eat this?” .
At that moment, Syeda Fatima remembered the necklace she had received as a wedding gift from her cousin Fatima bint Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib. This was her most prized possession, the only item of value she owned. She took the necklace off her neck and gave it to the old man, instructing him to sell it and use the money to fulfill his needs . The old man took the necklace and returned to the Holy Prophet, who wept upon hearing what his daughter had done. The Holy Prophet declared: “And how does Allah not recompense you with good for it while the daughter of Muhammad, the principal of the daughters of Adam, has given it to you?” .
Ammar bin Yasir, a devoted companion of the Holy Prophet, sought permission to buy the necklace. He gave the old man twenty dinars, two hundred dirhams, a Yemeni garment to cover himself, a camel to take him to his family, and a meal of wheat bread and meat. The old man departed joyfully, praising Allah and praying for Syeda Fatima . Ammar then perfumed the necklace with musk, wrapped it in a Yemeni garment, and sent it back to the Holy Prophet with one of his slaves, instructing the slave to deliver the necklace and offer himself as a gift to the Prophet. The Holy Prophet then sent the slave and the necklace back to his daughter, saying: “Take this necklace to Fatima and I gift you to her” .
When the slave arrived at Syeda Fatima’s home and delivered the necklace and the message, she took her necklace back and immediately set the slave free. The slave laughed loudly, and when asked why, he replied: “I laughed when I thought of the abundance of goodness in this glorious necklace – it came out of the house, fed a hungry man, clothed a naked man, and provided for a lost wayfarer. It then freed a slave from his bond and then returned to its rightful owner” . This incident beautifully illustrates that charity does not decrease one’s wealth but instead brings abundant blessings from Almighty Allah.
Her Detachment from Worldly Things and Care for the Needy
Huzoor Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha) lived a life of complete detachment from worldly pleasures and possessions. When the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWAW) once visited her home and saw a decorated curtain on her door, he refused to enter, stating that he was not interested in worldly things . When Imam Ali informed Syeda Fatima of this, she immediately responded: “I am ready to dispense with it in the way he suggests” . The Holy Prophet then ordered her to send the curtain to needy people who were in need of it . This incident demonstrates not only her respect for her father’s wishes but also her eagerness to give away anything that was unnecessary, even something as simple as a decorative curtain.
Syeda Fatima’s service to the poor extended beyond giving material possessions. She personally milled wheat and barley for her poor neighbors who were unable to do so themselves. She also carried water to her weak and elderly neighbors who could not get water on their own . This physical service, performed despite her own responsibilities and hardships, demonstrates that her charity was comprehensive—it included both giving from what one possesses and serving others with one’s own hands.
