As the Holy Prophet himself narrated: “Archangel Gabriel came down from the heavens with a plate containing a cluster of dates and a bunch of grapes ordering me to eat them. After I ate them I was ordered to go to Khadija and thus Fatima was conceived from the fruits of paradise” . This blessed conception established that Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah was not merely a child of earthly origin but a celestial being whose light originated from the divine realm.
The pregnancy of Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha) was itself filled with miraculous signs. The embryo would speak to her from inside her womb, comforting her during times of distress . When the Holy Prophet found Hadrat Khadija speaking to someone while alone, he inquired, and she replied: “That which is in my womb, surely it speaks to me.” The Prophet then cheerfully declared: “Rejoice Khadija, for this is the girl whom Allah has made to be the mother of eleven of my successors who will come after me and after their father” . This prophetic announcement established the central role of Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah in the continuation of the Prophet’s spiritual lineage.
The Dignity of Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra: The Mother of the Queen of Paradise
Before understanding the miraculous birth of Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah, we must appreciate the exalted status of her noble mother, Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha). She was a Qurayshi woman of exceptional character, known even in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance as “Taahirah” (the Pure) and “Sayyidatu Quraysh” (the Chief of Quraysh) . Her lineage connected with the blessed lineage of the Holy Prophet through just three links, a unique honor among the Prophet’s wives .
Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra was the first woman to accept Islam, setting an unparalleled example of faith and conviction . The Holy Prophet himself declared: “By Allah! I have not found a better wife than Khadijah. When everyone rejected me, she believed in me; when everyone denied me, she bore witness to me; and when no one was ready to give me anything, Khadijah gave to me all her things, and Allah has granted me children from her” . She spent all her wealth in the propagation of Islam and endured the three-year siege of Shi’b-e-Abi Talib alongside the Holy Prophet .
The ultimate honor bestowed upon her was the divine greeting from Almighty Allah Himself. Archangel Gabriel came to the Holy Prophet and conveyed: “O Messenger of Allah! Khadijah is approaching. She has a pot of food. When she approaches you, convey to her the Salam of your Lord and mine and give her the good news of a home made of a case-like (hollow) pearl in Paradise that has neither any noise nor any other inconvenience” . This divine Salam was a testament to her unparalleled status as the Mother of the Believers.
The Rejection by the Women of Quraysh
The sensitive moments of the holy birth revealed the depth of enmity that the Qurayshi women harbored against Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra. When the time of delivery approached, she sent for the neighboring Qurayshi women to assist her in the birthing process. However, they flatly refused, saying: “We will not help you; for you became Muhammad’s wife” and “You have married the orphan Abu Talib who has no money, we will not come to your aid either” .
The reason for this rejection was deeply rooted in the social and economic dynamics of pre-Islamic Mecca. Before embracing Islam and marrying the Holy Prophet, Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra was a wealthy and influential woman. The women of Quraysh used to visit her home for financial benefits and to enjoy the tasty food she would provide. However, after she accepted Islam and married the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWAW), these visits ceased. The women of Quraysh, who had benefited from her generosity, now turned against her because her faith and marriage to the Prophet challenged their established social and religious norms .
This rejection left Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra in a state of deep distress. She was perturbed and saddened by their refusal to assist her during such a critical moment . However, the divine mercy of Almighty Allah was about to manifest in a manner that would eclipse all worldly support and demonstrate the celestial significance of the birth about to take place.
The Arrival of the Heavenly Midwives
When Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra was in her most vulnerable state, four women of indescribable beauty and brilliance entered her home. Their appearance was so majestic that it dispelled all fear and anxiety from Hadrat Khadija’s heart . Each of these women introduced themselves as the most exalted female personalities in the history of humanity:
One said: “I am your Mother Eve (Hawwa)”, the first woman created by Allah.
Another said: “I am Asiya bint Muzahim, the wife of Pharaoh”, who was the believing woman mentioned in the Holy Quran.
The third said: “I am Kulthum, the sister of Musa (Moses)”, a woman of piety and faith.
The fourth said: “I am Maryam bint Imran, the mother of Isa (Jesus)”, the most honored woman before the birth of Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah .
They declared: “We have all been commanded by God to put our nursing knowledge at your disposal. We are your sisters and have been sent by Allah to help you” . One of them sat on the right, one on the left, one in front, and one behind Hadrat Khadija, and they rendered all the services of midwifery until the blessed child was born .
The Miraculous Birth and the Light of Divine Revelation
When Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah was born, the heavens and the earth witnessed a miraculous event. She fell to the ground in the position of prostration (sajda), raising her finger to recite the testimony of faith (kalima) . A brilliant light emanated from her that illuminated all the houses, and there was no place in the east or west of the earth that her light did not reach . It was for this reason that she was named “az-Zahra” (the Lady of Light) .
Ten maidens of Paradise (Hour al-Ain) entered, each holding a basin and a jug containing the water of Kauthar, the celestial river of Paradise. They washed the newborn Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah with this blessed water and brought her two garments of pure white, fragrant with the scents of milk, musk, and amber. One garment was used to wrap her and the other as a veil .
At the very moment of her birth, Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah spoke and testified: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that my father is the Messenger of Allah, the master of the prophets; my husband is the master of the guardians (successors); and my children are the masters of the children” . This divine declaration established her complete awareness of her noble status and the exalted positions of her father, husband, and sons.
The Divine Revelation of Surah Al-Kawthar
The birth of Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah was so significant that Almighty Allah revealed Surah Al-Kawthar to console the Holy Prophet and to refute his enemies who mocked him for having no male heir to continue his lineage. Those enemies called him “cut off” and without posterity . Allah declared: “Verily, We granted you Kawthar (the Abundant Blessing). So, turn to your Lord in Prayer and make a sacrifice. Surely, your enemy (and not you) is the one who shall be without posterity” (Surah Al-Kawthar, verses 1-3).
Most Quranic commentators believe that “Kawthar” refers to Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah and her blessed progeny, through whom the lineage of the Holy Prophet continues to this day . Surah Al-Insan was also revealed in praise of the Ahlul-Bayt, including Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah, when she, along with Imam Ali and their household, fasted for three days and fed the needy despite their own hunger .
The Date of the Holy Birth
The most reliable narrations from the Imams of Ahlul-Bayt state that Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah was born on the 20th of Jamadi al-Thani in the fifth year after the declaration of Prophethood, which corresponds to 615 AD . Some Sunni scholars claim she was born five years before the Prophethood, but the more authentic view is that her birth was after revelation, as narrated by the Imams of Ahlul-Bayt (peace be upon them) . This is a matter of theological importance, as it confirms the miraculous nature of her birth from a sperm produced from an apple of Paradise .
The Nurturing of the Divine Child
Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra nursed Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah herself, unlike her other children who were given to other women for nursing . She grew and developed faster than other children, and from the very beginning, signs of blessing and purity were evident in her . However, the motherly blessings and affection she received were only for five years, after which Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra left for her heavenly home, and the Holy Prophet himself brought her up with the utmost love and care .
The holy birth of Huzoor Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah (Salam Allah-Ho Alaiha) stands as one of the most extraordinary events in human history. The rejection of the Qurayshi women who had previously benefited from Hadrat Khadija-tul-Kubra’s generosity but now refused her in her time of need serves as a powerful reminder of the fickleness of worldly attachments. Yet, the divine intervention through the arrival of the four celestial women—Hawwa, Asiya, Kulthum, and Maryam—demonstrated that those who are forsaken by the world are never abandoned by Allah.
The miraculous circumstances of her birth—her prostration upon arrival, her recitation of the kalima, the divine light that illuminated the world, and the heavenly midwives who attended her—all testify to her supreme status as the Chief Princess of all women of the universes and Jannah. Her birth was a fulfillment of divine promise, a comfort to the Holy Prophet, and the beginning of a blessed lineage that would continue to guide humanity until the end of time.
As the mother of the infallible Imams and the blessed daughter of the Holy Prophet, Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah remains the eternal role model for all women, and her miraculous birth stands as a perpetual reminder of Allah’s infinite mercy and the exalted status of the Panjtan Paak in the divine scheme of creation.
